The flow of casualties from the various theatres of war soon overwhelmed the existing medical facilities in the United Kingdom. Not only were civilian hospitals and large buildings turned over to military use but new hospitals were also created at hutted army camps and within private houses. In the Whitchurch area there were three main medical facilities used by the military.
cottage hospital In the town was the existing Cottage Hospital which had been built in 1886 and enlarged in 1897.
Prees hospital At Prees Heath Camp a 500 bed military hospital was constructed which consisted of nine wings.

Broughall Cottage
A Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.) Hospital was opened at Broughall Cottage, Prees Heath. It had beds for 20 patients.
