George Thomas Bailey

Personal Details

Born:  30 November 1892 at Bunbury, Cheshire.

Family:  He was one of five children born to Thomas Bailey, a canal inspector, and his wife Elizabeth (nee Venables). George does not appear to have married.

Residence:  In 1901 the Bailey Family were living at Boot’s Cottage, Alkington Road, Whitchurch, Shropshire. By 1911 George was living at  “Fernleigh”, 103 Alkington Road, Whitchurch with his family. He was still living there when he enlisted and remained there after demobilisation for the rest of his life.

Employment:  At his enlistment George was a solicitor’s clerk. The 1939 Register shows him as a Building Society Secretary (Local Government and Other Appointments).

Died:  George died on 16 February 1959 at Prees Green, Prees, Shropshire.

Rank:   Private, rising to the rank of Acting Sergeant by the time of his demobilisation.

Date of Enlistment:  11 December 1915

Date of Discharge:  17 February 1919

Reason for Discharge:  Demobilisation

Other Information:  George enlisted in Whitchurch at the age of 23. He does not appear to have been posted overseas during his military service. There are no records of medals awarded to him.
