Personal Details

Born: 13 October 1889 in Whitchurch, Shropshire.

Family:  He was the youngest child born to Richard Birch, an ironfoundry salesman, and his wife Emily (nee Willett). His siblings were Emily and Richard. Francis married Ada M. Heatley Quarter 3 1942 in Whitchurch, Shropshire. No children can be found for the marriage.

Residence: In 1891 the family were living in Egerton Road, Whitchurch, Shropshire. Ten years later their address was given as 69 Talbot Street. By the time of the 1911 Census the family had moved to Glynwood, Salisbury Road, Whitchurch. Francis remained at this address until he died in 1966.

Employment: On the 1911 Census Francis was described as an ironmonger’s assistant, but by the time of his Attestation in 1916 his occupation was that of a bookkeeper. At the time of the 1939 Register he was working as a salesman for a farm feed and seed company.

Died:  15 December 1966 in The Cottage Hospital, Whitchurch, Shropshire, aged 77.

Other Information: Joseph enlisted in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, so must have travelled to Canada sometime between 1911 and 1916.
