William Arthur Phillips was born in Wigland, Malpas, Cheshire in 1895, the second son of George and May Phillips of The Shop, Horseman’s Green, Whitchurch, Shropshire.
The 1911 Census shows William working in his father’s bakery and shop.
William’s elder brother, Fred, was killed on the same day in the same offensive.
