Born in Dudley, Worcestershire in 1880, the only son of Patrick and Margaret Hagan
At the time of his call up William was living in Pepper Street, Whitchurch, Shropshire

William was a regular soldier, joining the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers in Wrexham, on May 7th 1900. He served in South Africa and India with the Regiment between 1901 and 1908 for which he was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal.
He remained a reservist with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and was recalled at the start of the war in August 1914, rejoining his old Regiment.
