Personal Details

Born: 31 March 1891 in Altrincham, Cheshire.

Family: He was the fourth of five children of Walter Hobbs, a grocer’s assistant, and his wife Jane. He married Jessie May Douglas in Whitchurch, Shropshire in 1915 and together they had 2 children – John Leslie and Irene Mary, both born in the town. A third child Richard Alan was born in Derby.

Residence: In 1891 he was living with his family in Byrom Street, Altrincham, Cheshire. By 1901 they had moved to 32 Watergate Street, Whitchurch where they were still living in 1911. The 1919 Absent Voters’ Register has him living at 15 Bark Hill, Whitchurch. By 1939 he was living at Ixoyd, Melton Avenue, Shardlow, Derbyshire. When he died he was living at 64 High Street, Cowes, Isle of Wight.

Employment: In 1911 he was an ironmonger’s assistant; by 1939 he had become a schoolteacher.

Died: 5 October 1968 at Cowes on the Isle of Wight; buried on 10 October 1968 in Whitchurch cemetery, Shropshire aged 77.
