Personal Details

Born:  30 May 1874 in Burleydam, Cheshire.

Family:  He was the fourth of nine children born to Thomas Burgess, a farmer, and his wife Louisa (nee Hill). He married Frances Challinor 7 March 1905 in Whitchurch, Shropshire. They had three children, Ethel Mary, Florence Vernon and Alice.

Residence: On the 1881 and 1891 Censuses he was living in Burleydam but by 1891 he had moved with his widowed mother to 7 Brownlow Street, Whitchurch, Shropshire. In 1911, now married, he can be found at The Royal Oak, Broxton, Handley, Cheshire.  The address given for him on his service records was 9 Brownlow Street, Whitchurch. By 1939 he was in Wales at the Loggerheads Inn, Ruthin, Denbighshire.

Employment:  In 1901 he was described as an auctioneer’s assistant but by 1911 he was a licensed victualler and then a hotel proprietor.
