Born: 26 June 1880 in Bridgnorth, Shropshire and baptised on 25 July in the same year in Worfield, Shropshire.
Family: He was the only child of George Hayward, a brewer’s drayman, and his wife Mary Ann. He married Sarah Eleanor Butcher on 15 August 1906 in Bridgnorth Parish Church and together they had a son George Ernest.
Residence: At the time of his baptism the family were living in Bromley, Shropshire. In 1891 they were living in Registry Street, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and by 1901 they had moved to 82 Copeland Street. By 1911 Ernest had married and was living with his wife and son at 74 Grosvenor Avenue, Oakhill, Stoke-on-Trent. When he left the army in 1919 the family were living at 3 Cambrian View, Whitchurch where they continued to live until at least 1939.
Employment: Ernest was a hairdresser.
Died: March 1943 in Chester.
