Born in Whixall, Whitchurch, Shropshire in 1879, the fourth son of Sarah Clorley and the late Benjamin Clorley of Abbey Green, Whixall, Whitchurch, Shropshire.
William was a platelayer for the London and North Western Railway before he enlisted in February 1916.
