Joseph Henry Smith born in Wem, Shropshire in 1886, the second son of Thomas and Sarah Smith of Wood Cottage, Bettisfield, Flintshire, Wales.
Joseph left home in his early teens; the 1901 Census shows him living in Wem, Shropshire as an undergroom to Charles Reader, physician and surgeon. The 1911 census shows him living in Pontarddulais, Glamorgan as a general labourer.
