Born: 8 June 1899 in Wrenbury, Cheshire.

Family: He was the eldest of four children born to William Sutton, a cow man, and his wife Mary Ann. He married Sarah Gwendoline Slack in June 1923 in Wem, Shropshire and together they had four children – Freda, Gwendoline, John Colin and Bernard R.

Residence: In 1901 he lived with his parents at 5 St. John Street, Whitchurch, Shropshire; by 1911 the family had moved to 5 Steele Road, Tilstock, Shropshire. When discharged in 1919 he lived at 6 Brades Lane, Whitchurch. In 1939 he was living with his wife at 4 Armoury Lane, Wem, Shropshire.
