Born in Ellesmere, Shropshire in 1894, the eldest son of James and Emily Hopley of Cuddington, Malpas, Cheshire.
The 1911 Census shows John as general servant to Mrs Harriet Taylor, baker, and her family at Church Street, Malpas, Cheshire.
John joined up on 7th September 1914 with a friend, David Davies. They both died in the same battle, killed by the same shell, on 17th April 1917 and are buried in adjacent graves.
